Waking up Sunday to Fall Back into Nature
With the end of daylight savings time Sunday morning, we had an extra hour to prepare for a special free event that brought community groups together to celebrate nature in the Panhandle. It was the second of the special events planned for the Panhandle Park Action Project.
Dozens of kids were excited by the free face-painting and everyone was treated to fuji apples donated by Earl's Organic Produce. Here are some photos to show you more of the highlights.

The rain garden was available as a spot for planting a young dogwood, generously provided by the Recreation and Parks Department and planted with the help of four young ladies. Cornus sericea supsp. occidentalis is the species of dogwood found locally, typically in wetlands. Its red stems are most apparent in winter, during its dormant season, and in the summer it has clusters of small white flowers. |

After Bay to Breakers 2013
The Bay to Breakers crowds are mostly gone, and there's still another hour or so of daylight, so head out for a walk in the park! Here are a few scenes from late afternoon.

Be a star, on your bike
The Wiggle is name of the local bike route that leads cyclists between Mint Hill and the Panhandle. I'm helping spread the word about a special video shoot, happening one day only: next Sunday. Here's the details:

Join the party on Sunday May 22, 2:00pm at Duboce Park (corner of Duboce and Steiner) to film a video for THE WIGGLE! We’ll start by filming a group shot at Duboce Park, then we’ll turn to the streets to capture what it's like to ride The Wiggle with all of your closest friends.
What: The Wiggle PSA video shootWhen: Sunday, May 22nd @ 2pmWhere: Meet at Duboce Park (corner of Duboce and Steiner)Who: Any and all bicyclists! More Info: DoTheWiggle.com or RSVP to our Facebook event
We want all kinds of bikes to represent: cruisers, fixies, road bikes, party machines, double-deckers, triple-deckers, Trikeasauruses, pedicabs and whatever else you’ve got. Just ride on over, and bring as many friends as you can muster. Of course, this being a San Francisco bike party, if you want to dress in your bicycle best, we won’t stop you!

Sept Work Day wrap-up
As promised, the hedge-clippers were brought out for this huge monster shrub, a species from Chiapas.
New plants went into a few of the beds on the eastern end, north side. How cute are they?
And speaking of cute, here's a bike party we found back on the west end near Masonic. This party serves as a great reminder about why to keep this nice space open and unobstructed!

Labor Day in the Park
On Labor Day, what better way to celebrate your work than with a day of rest in the neighborhood park?
In the west end, the Panhandle this afternoon was bounce-housey, and skate park-ey.
Meanwhile, east of Masonic, the open meadows beckoned for picnicking with friends in the shade of the cypress and laurel.

Our great outdoors
The President has a new memorandum about America's Great Outdoors, calling for greater federal efforts that would, among other things, promote "community-based recreation and conservation." Here are a couple of ways our community was out enjoying the Panhandle Park this weekend.
